The trams themselves get rid of cars by virtue of being on the road, and having the central traffic light computer clearing lights ahead of the tram via Green Wave Traffic Light Pre-emption  (not generally applicable to buses)    You can see this here in the Centre of Brussels, with the  Traffic Light Pre-emption   allowing the tram a free run, with the cars behind.  This high quality of service attracts car drivers out of their cars. about 25% of passengers left a car at home, virtually zero mode shift with buses.
