Are trams being removed in Melbourne? (No)

Dave,

Trams are a major form of public transport in Melbourne, the capital city of
the state of Victoria, Australia. As of May 2017, the Melbourne tramway
network consists of 250 kilometres of track, 493 trams, 24 routes, and 1,763
tram stops.

There is nothing on the Technical media about closure, since new trams are
on order and being introduced. Could it be that routine track replacement
has been mis-understood as abandonment ?

My daughter has moved to Melbourne and says they are removing their tram
network, do you know why?
